Development of Koç University Campus Access Management System During COVID-19

Koç University implemented an advanced campus access control system using the low-code platform Mendix to streamline entry management across its two distinct campuses. Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, this campus management system was designed to meet the unique access control needs of higher education institutions, ensuring a secure and seamless experience for students, staff, and visitors. By integrating key technologies, including a learning management system and health monitoring tools, the university enhanced security while maintaining efficient operations. This innovative college access control solution demonstrates how educational institutions can improve safety and visitor management with modern digital solutions.

Overview of the Access Management System

The Koç University campus access management system was developed to facilitate controlled entry to both the Main campus and the West Campus. Each campus has specific access rules that must be adhered to, particularly in light of the ongoing pandemic.

Main Campus (RFK) Features

The main campus is home to several laboratories where researchers are required to complete specific training courses. These courses are delivered online through Blackboard, the university's learning management system (LMS). To ensure that only qualified individuals can access the laboratories, the access management system integrates with Blackboard to verify that users have completed the necessary training.

West Campus (WEST) Features

The West Campus accommodates approximately 20 dormitories for both female and male students. To manage access to these dormitories, a rule engine was developed to assess each user's eligibility based on predefined criteria. This rule engine plays a crucial role in determining whether an individual has the right to access specific gates on campus.

Health Integration

In addition to the training verification, the system integrates with the Health Ministry department to check the vaccination status of users. This integration is vital for maintaining a safe environment on campus, as it ensures that only vaccinated individuals are granted access.

Health Monitoring Tools

To further enhance health safety measures, infrared thermometers have been installed at dormitory entrances to assess the health status of individuals entering the premises. This technology allows for real-time health monitoring and helps identify individuals who may be exhibiting symptoms of illness.

Health Center Application

An application was also developed for the university's health center, enabling staff to check, report, and restrict access based on a patient's health status. This application ensures that individuals who may pose a health risk are prevented from entering campus facilities, thereby protecting the wider university community.

Conclusion

The development of the Koç University campus access management system during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the effectiveness of using a low-code platform like Mendix to create tailored solutions for complex challenges. By integrating various technologies and adhering to health guidelines, the system not only facilitates secure access to campus facilities but also promotes the health and safety of all students and staff.
